Hungary Running Race Preview: Zúzmara
January Series #1
Winter running is fun!
Well, that was my thought leaving the race-site by bus after the 2017 Zúzmara half marathon. A repeat visit to the 2018 event only cemented that feeling alongside the realisation that - at this race at least - good times don't have to be hampered by the cold and snow; I came within a hair's breadth of my PB.
Zúzmara is a half-marathon with additional shorter distances throughout the day. This year it will be held on the 13th January. The race is organised by the BSI group and if you would like to sign up, you will need to go to the BSI Futanet website and stay in Hungarian as the number of races offered by BSI on the English pages is much reduced.
The race takes place at the Hungexpo site and runners compete on a flat course in, around and outside the exhibition site and on a horse-racing track! For the half-marathon there are two loops with an extension on the road after the first loop. The terrain greatly depends on the weather, I suggest that one would probably be best in light trail shoes as both mud and snow are likely; with that said, standard road shoes would be fine, and better than more 'luggy' trail runners.
There is something special about the atmosphere at this race. The start in the building offers comfort (and coffee!) for those supporting the runners, whilst anyone taking part seems to get wrapped up in the mild absurdity of racing in such conditions. Although there are races which are more extreme, for a mass participation event in the centre of a capital city, this all feels challenging and fun!
I hope to see you there! See below for transport detail.
Public Transport Options
Access to the race is simple. Hop on to metro line M2 and get off at Pillangó utca. You can walk from there by turning left out of the station and left at the next junction. It should take about 10 minutes before you start to see race paraphernalia on your left. An alternative is to ride the M2 to Örs vezér tere. Catch the 10 bus until Vásárközpont, főbejárat.
